COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
Arkansas Crossroads
1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each B square.
2. Layer a B square, right sides together, on the top left corner of an A square as shown in Figure 1. Stitch on the drawn line. Trim 1/4" beyond the sewn line; open and press. Repeat on the bottom right corner. Make eight A-B units.
3. Stitch a blue C square and a D square together as shown in Figure 2. Make eight blue C-D units. Stitch two blue
C-D units together to make a four patch. Make four blue four-patch units.
4. Repeat step 3, referring again to Figure 2, to make four yellow four-patch units as shown.
5. Refer to the block diagram to arrange the units from steps 2–4 into four rows. Stitch the units into rows; sew the rows together to complete the Arkansas Crossroads block.
Square & Star
1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the E and G squares.
2. Layer an E square right sides together on an F square as shown in Figure 3. Stitch 1/4" from each side of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line; open and press to make two E-F units. Trim each unit to 41/2", keeping seam centered. Make four E-F units.
3. Layer a G square right sides together on an H square as shown in Figure 4. Stitch 1/4" from both sides of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line. Open and press to make two G-H units. Make eight G-H units.
4. On the wrong side of four G-H units, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner in the opposite direction of the seam. Referring to Figure 5, layer one marked G-H unit on one unmarked G-H unit with right sides together, placing opposite colors facing as shown. Stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line, open and press to make two G-H QST units. Trim each unit to 41/2", keeping center point centered. Make eight G-H QST units.
5. Refer to the block diagram to arrange the step 2 and step 4 units along with the I squares in four rows. Stitch the units and squares into rows; sew the rows together to complete the Square & Star block.
Basket
1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the K and M squares.
2. Layer a K square and yellow J square, right sides together as shown in Figure 6. Stitch 1/4" from each side of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line; open and press to make two yellow J-K units. Trim each unit to 21/2", keeping seam centered. Make 10 total yellow J-K units.
3. Repeat step 2, referring again to Figure 6, to make 10 green J-K units as shown.
4. Repeat step 2 with M squares and N squares to make two each blue #2 and blue #4 M-N units as shown in Figure 7. Trim each unit to 41/2", keeping seam centered.
5. Referring to Figure 8 to make one basket unit, stitch two yellow J-K units together as shown. Stitch to the side of a blue #4 M-N unit. Stitch three yellow
J-K units together and stitch to the top as shown.
6. Stitch blue #4 O triangles to two L rectangles as shown in Figure 9. Stitch L-O units to adjacent sides of the step 5 unit as shown. Stitch a P triangle to the corner to complete a yellow basket.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to make a second yellow basket.
8. Referring to Figure 10, repeat steps 5 and 6, using the green J-K units and blue #2 M-N units, O triangles, L rectangles and P triangle. 9. Refer to the block diagram to arrange the baskets in two rows. Sew into rows; sew the rows together to complete the Basket block.
