Puss in the Corner

A simple block set on point with alternatin­g plain squares provides lots of space for beautiful quilting.

MATERIALS

• 81/2 yards white tonal

• 11/4 yards mauve tonal

• Backing to size

• Batting to size

• Thread

• Basic sewing tools and supplies

PROJECT NOTES

Read all instructio­ns before beginning this project.

Stitch right sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise specified.

Materials and cutting lists assume 40" of usable fabric width for yardage. WOF – width of fabric

HST – half-square triangle

QST – quarter-square triangle

CUTTING

From white tonal cut:

• 8 (21/2" x WOF) A strips

• 16 (11/4" x WOF) B strips

• 100 (4") E squares

• 16 (11") F squares

• 4 (16") G squares then cut twice

diagonally

• 2 (81/4") H squares then cut once

diagonally

• 10 (21/2" x WOF) binding strips From remaining length of white tonal cut:

• 2 (10" x 743/4") I border strips

• 2 (10" x 933/4") J border strips From mauve tonal cut:

• 8 (21/2" x WOF) C strips

• 16 (11/4" x WOF) D strips

COMPLETING THE BLOCKS

1. Referring to Figure 1, sew one D strip to each long side of an A strip and press toward D to make a strip set. Make eight. Cut 250 (11/4" x 4") D-A-D segments from strip sets.

2. Referring to Figure 2, sew a B strip to each long side of a C strip and press toward C to make a strip set. Make eight. Cut 125 (21/2" x 4") B-C-B segments from strip sets. 3. Referring to Figure 3, arrange two D-A-D segments and one B-C-B segment as shown, sew together and press seams open to complete one pieced unit.

Make 125.

4. Referring to the block diagram, arrange five pieced units with four E squares as shown, sew together and press seams open to complete one Puss in the Corner block. Make 25.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

1. Referring to the Assembly Diagram, arrange the blocks with F squares and G and H triangles in diagonal rows as shown and sew together. Then sew the rows together to complete the quilt center.

2. Sew the I border strips to opposite sides and the J border strips to the top and bottom to complete the quilt top.

3. Layer, quilt as desired and bind the quilt referring to Quilting Basics.
