COMPLETING THE BLOCKS

1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each A, C and E square.

“This fabric collection sparked my creativity. It reminds me of the hot and humid summer days I spent as a little girl at Woodhaven Lakes in Sublette, IL.” —Palmer Bixler

2. Place an A square right sides together on one end of an H rectangle and sew on the drawn line as shown in Figure 1. Trim seam allowance to 1/4" and press open. Repeat to add an A square at the opposite end of the H rectangle to complete an A-H unit. Make 72.

3. In the same way, repeat step 2 using E squares and

B rectangles to make 34

B-E units as shown in Figure 2.

4. Referring to Figure 3, position a C square right sides together on a D square and stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Cut apart on the marked line and press units open. Trim to measure 21/2" square, keeping seam centered. Make 72 C-D units.

5. In the same way, repeat step 4 to make 68 C-F units and 72 C-I units as shown in Figure 4.

6. Referring to Figure 5, sew together one each C-D, C-I and A-H unit to make a quarter block unit. Make 72.

7. Referring to Figure 6, lay out four quarter block units into two rows of two as shown. Sew into rows and join the rows to complete a Sunbathing block. Make 18.

8. Position one G rectangle right sides together on the left end of one B rectangle as shown in Figure 7. Measure and mark a dot 21/2" down from the top left corner and draw a diagonal line from the upper right corner of G to the dot. Sew on the drawn line. Trim 1/4" away from the line and press.

In the same way, position one G rectangle right sides together on the right end of the B rectangle from step 8 as shown in Figure 8. Measure down and mark a dot 21/2" from the top right corner and draw a diagonal line from corner to dot. Stitch on the drawn line, trim 1/4" away from the line and press open to make a B-G unit. Make 34.

10. Referring to Figure 9, lay out four

C-F units for the center pinwheel unit, noting orientation of the stripes if desired, and sew together. Sew B-E units to opposite sides of the center unit.

Sew B-G units to the top and bottom as shown to complete a Pinwheel Beauty block. Make 17.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

1. Referring to the Assembly Diagram, lay out the blocks in seven rows of five blocks each, noting the placement of the blocks.

2. Sew the blocks into rows and join the rows to complete the quilt center. Press.

3. Sew J strips to the sides of the quilt center. Sew K strips to the top and bottom.

4. Sew L strips to the sides of the quilt center. Sew M strips to the top and bottom.

5. Sew N strips to the sides of the quilt center. Sew O strips to the top and bottom.
