COMPLETING THE BLOCKS

Refer to the Paper Piecing sidebar for general paper-piecing instructions and to the Assembly Diagram and photo for fabric placement.

Here’s a Tip

Some copy machines may distort the pattern. Always check the first copy for accuracy before printing the remaining copies!

1. For one block, use four each sections A and B paper foundations; from cut fabric pieces select eight each B and C rectangles, four each D, F and G pieces, and four sets of matching-fabric A and E rectangles.

2. To make one section A, stitch cut fabric pieces to a paper-piecing foundation in the following positions:

A1 – batik A rectangle

A2 – green B rectangle

A3 – green B rectangle

A4 – background C rectangle

A5 – background C rectangle

A6 – green D HST

3. To make one section B, stitch cut fabric pieces to a paper-piecing foundation in the following positions:

B1 – batik E rectangle

B2 – background F rectangle

B3 – background G rectangle

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make four each A and B sections.

I have been making a lot of scrap quilts using fabric from when I first started to quilt way back when. I had a lot of batiks that I thought would make a bright and cheerful quilt. I think I accomplished my goal.” —Carolyn Cullinan McCormick

5. Trim completed sections on solid lines. 6. Pair sections A and B that have matching batik fabrics. Remove paper from center seam area, leaving the remaining paper in place. Join units along center seam.

7. Referring to Figure 1, arrange four paper-pieced tulips as shown. Join in rows; sew the rows together to make a Scrappy Tulips block.

8. Repeat steps 1–7 to make 20 Scrappy Tulips blocks.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

1. Referring to Assembly Diagram, arrange blocks, H sashing strips and I squares as shown.

2. Join blocks and H sashing strips together into rows. Sew H sashing strips and I squares together into rows. Sew the rows together. Press seams toward sashing strips.

3. Add J border strips to the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press seams toward borders.

4. Sew K border strips to the sides of the quilt center. Press seams toward borders.
