Materials listed make 4 place mats and 1 mug rug.

• 1/ 3 yard chicken print*

• 1/ 3 yard medium blue print* • 1/2 yard pink print*

• 1/2 yard yellow print*

• 3/4 yard navy floral*

• 1 yard dark blue print*

• Backing to size

• Batting to size

• Thread

• Template material

• Basic sewing tools and supplies

PROJECT NOTES

Read all instructio­ns before beginning this project.

Stitch right sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise specified.

Materials and cutting lists assume 40" of usable fabric width.

WOF – width of fabric

HST – half-square triangle

QST – quarter-square triangle

CUTTING

From chicken print cut:

• 5 (61/2") A squares

From medium blue cut:

• 16 (31/2") E squares

From pink print cut:

• 16 (31/2" x 61/2") D rectangles

• 4 (41/4") F squares then cut twice

diagonally

From yellow print cut:

• 16 (31/2" x 61/2") B rectangles

• 12 (31/2") I squares

From navy floral cut:

• 48 (31/2") C squares

• 4 (41/4") H squares then cut twice

diagonally

From dark blue print cut:

• 4 (41/4") G squares then cut twice

diagonally

• 8 (21/2" x WOF) binding strips

COMPLETING THE PLACE MATS

1. Draw a line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all C and E squares.

2. For one place mat, select 12 C squares, four each B and D rectangles, four E squares, two I squares, four each F, G and H triangles, and one A square.

3. Referring to Figure 1, place a C square on the left end of a B rectangle and stitch along the drawn line. Trim excess, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance, and press C open. Repeat on the opposite end of C to make a flying geese unit. Make four flying geese units.

4. Referring to Figure 2, place an E square on the left end of a D rectangle. Stitch, trim and press open. Place a C square on the other end of D. Stitch, trim and press open to complete a C-D-E unit. Make two C-D-E units and two reverse C-D-E units as shown.

5. Join one each G and H triangles with F triangles as shown in Figure 3. Join G and H triangles to I square as shown, paying attention to orientatio­n of the triangles. Stitch the units together to complete a side unit. Make two side units.

6. Join units from steps 3–5 with an A square as shown in the Assembly Diagram to make one place mat.

7. Repeat steps 2–6 to make a total of four place mat tops.

8. Layer the place mat tops with batting and backing; quilt as desired and bind referring to Quilting Basics.

COMPLETING THE MUG RUG

1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of four I squares.

2. Referring to Figure 4, place an I square on opposite corners of an A square as shown. Stitch along the drawn lines, trim, leaving 1/4" seam allowances, and press open. Position I squares on the remaining corners of A. Stitch on the drawn lines, trim and press open as shown.

3. Layer the mug rug with batting and backing, quilt as desired and bind referring to Quilting Basics.
