Winter Blooms
A quartet of stylized flower motifs blooms on this wintry red and white pillow. Simple embroidery accents add texture and keep the look clean and crisp.

MATERIALS
• 1/2 yard 36"-wide red wool felt*
• 17" square pillow back dark red
wool felt*
• 18" x 20" piece white wool felt*
• 9" x 13" piece gray wool felt* • Six-strand embroidery floss: red,
white, gray
• Polyester fiberfill
• Embroidery needle
• Template material or freezer paper • Small, sharp scissors
• Thread
• Basic sewing tools and supplies
PROJECT NOTES
Read all instructions before beginning this project.
Refer to photo and Placement Diagrams for appliqué positions.
Use two strands of matching embroidery floss and backstitch for all sewing and embroidery unless otherwise stated.
Sew 1/8" from fabric edge unless otherwise stated.
CUTTING
Prepare templates for Petals A, B and C and Flower Center using patterns provided.
From red wool felt cut:
• 1 (17") F square
• 2 (71/2") D squares
• 8 A petals
• 4 B petals
• 4 C petals
From white wool felt cut:
• 2 (71/2") E squares
• 8 A petals
• 4 B petals
• 4 C petals
• 4 flower centers
From gray wool felt cut:
• 8 B petals
• 8 C petals
COMPLETING THE APPLIQUÉ
1. Referring to the Appliqué Placement Diagram for position and color arrangement, place a C petal on each B petal and pin in place. Referring to the black dashed lines on the Sewing/ Embroidery Diagram, sew C petals in place as described in Project Notes.
2. Place a B-C petal unit on each A petal and sew in place.
3. Embroider curved lines on each B and C petal as indicated by blue dashed-lines on the Sewing/Embroidery Diagram.

4. Arrange appliquéd petals on D and E squares as shown in the Appliqué Placement Diagram and sew in place. Sew a flower center to the center of each petal group.
COMPLETING THE PILLOW
1. Arrange the four appliquéd D and E squares on the F square as shown in the Placement Diagram and sew in place.
2. Pin pillow front to pillow back, right sides together. Sew pillow front and back together with a 1/2" seam, leaving an opening at bottom for turning. Clip corners, trim seams, and turn pillow to right side.
3. Stuff pillow with fiberfill and sew opening closed.
