Make a bold statement with a giant star block! Four fat quarters are used in this project that can be used as either a wall hanging or baby quilt.

MATERIALS

• 1 fat quarter each of a blue, green, yellow and coral print*

• 1¼ yards background

• 3⁄8 yard binding fabric*

• 1¾ yards backing

• 48" x 48" batting

• Thread

• Basics sewing tools and supplies

PROJECT NOTES

Read all instructio­ns before beginning this project.

Stitch right sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise specified.

Materials and cutting lists assume 40" of usable fabric width for yardage and 20" for fat quarters.

Arrows indicate directions to press seams.

WOF – width of fabric

HST – half-square triangle

QST – quarter-square triangle

CUTTING

From blue fat quarter cut:

• 2(9 ½") A squares

• 8 (3") B squares

From green fat quarter cut:

• 2(9 ½") C squares

• 8 (3") D squares

From yellow fat quarter cut:

• 2(9 ½") E squares

• 8 (3") F squares

From coral fat quarter cut:

• 2(9 ½") G squares

• 8 (3") H squares

From background cut:

• 4 (1½" x 17½") N rectangles

• 4 (2" x 10") M rectangles

• 4 (9½") I squares

• 4 (2" x 8½") L rectangles

• 16 (3") J squares

• 16 (2½") K squares

• 2 (2½" x 36½") O border strips

• 2 (2½" x 40½") P border strips

From binding fabric cut:

• 5(2 ½" x WOF) strips

COMPLETING THE BLOCKS

Small Star Blocks

1. Refer to Half-Square Triangles on page 16 and use the B, D, F, H and J squares to make eight each B-J, D-J,

F-J, H-J, B-D and F-H HST units. Trim each unit to 21/2" x 21/2" (Figure 1). 2. Arrange two each B-J, D-J, F-J, H-J, B-D and F-H units and four K squares into four rows of four. Sew into rows, then sew the rows together to complete a star unit (Figure 2). Make four. 3. Sew an L rectangle to one edge of each star unit. Then sew an M rectangle to the adjacent edge of each star unit to complete a Small Star block (Figure 3). Make four.
