Rosh HaShanah
The High Holiday of Rosh HaShanah has just passed. Rosh HaShanah is the Jewish New Year. It started at sunset and continued for two days. On Rosh Hashanah, Jews attend religious services and celebratory meals. Rosh Hashanah also marks the beginning of the Ten Days of Repentance, which conclude on Yom Kippur. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah, literally “day of shouting or blasting.” It is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days, that occur in the late summer/ early autumn of the Northern Hemisphere.
Observances include praying in synagogue, personal reflection and hearing or blowing the shofar.
This year Rosh HaShanah occurred on Sunday, Sept. 25 to Tuesday, Sept. 27.
