Dale is Player of the Year

In addition to being named to the all-conference first team, Wakefield Country Day School freshman Maeve Dale was named the Delaney Athletic Conference Division II Girls Varsity Basketball Player of the Year for the 2011-2012 season. She earned this honor through a consensus vote by the Conference’s head coaches.

Research indicates that Dale is the first female freshman to be named DAC Player of the Year in Division II since the conference aligned into divisions.

This is Dale’s second year starting for the basketball team at Wakefield. She takes the cen- ter jump and also brings the ball up the floor for the Owls. This season, she led the team in almost all categories.

“Maeve is truly a coach’s dream player,” said Wakefield head coach Ann Pankow. “She is a gifted athlete and a joy to be around. She is a great example of a player who is humble in victory and gracious in defeat. I am looking forward to watching her talent grow in the years to come. I also am so glad that she is only a freshman.”

Dale, of Luray, competed in 19 games for the Owls this year. Her game averages: 21.7 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.6 steals. She also logged 39 blocked shots.

“Maeve possesses very good skills and knowledge of the game, especially when you consider that she is only a freshman,” said Mike Costello, Wakefield’s athletic director. “Her 413 points this year are quite an accomplishment. She can play any position on the floor. She had nine double-doubles games this season and had 17 games scoring in double figures. She scored over 20 points in 12 games and over 30 in four of those games, including a season-high 36 points on Jan. 3. I am sure that Maeve would tell you that this award was made possible through the hard work, dedication and the assistance of her coaches and teammates.”

Wakefield swimmers compete

at state meet

Three Wakefield Country Day School varsity swimmers competed at the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association State Meet on Feb. 17 and 18 at the Freedom Center in Manassas. Their performances exceeded all previous results for the swimmers and the school.

Junior Rachel Dumez competed in the State meet for a third consecutive year; she swam her fastest high school times in the two events in which she raced. In the 100 backstroke, Dumez just missed breaking a minute and swam to a fourth-place finish. In the 100 butterfly, she finished in 10th place, and also just missed out on breaking the minute mark. By herself, Dumez’s exploits led the Wakefield team to a 22nd place finish among the 30 teams scoring and the 44 teams competing.

On the boys’ side of the meet, senior Michael O’heir finished 57th out of 65 competitors in the 50 freestyle. He was also 43rd in the 100 breaststroke. Junior Conor O’heir was 58th in the 50 freestyle.

Wakefield’s swimmers finished 4th out of the nine teams from its conference at the State meet.

Wakefield students named to all-conference teams

The following Wakefield Country Day School students were named All- Delaney Athletic Conference Athletes for winter sports. The students and their Division II awards are:

Boys Basketball: first team, Alex Foster and Brian Shafran; honorable mention, Greg Czekaj.

Girls Basketball: first team, Maeve Dale (also Player of the Year, Division II) and Kim Pankow.

Swimming: Rachel Dumez, Conor O’heir and Michael O’heir.

R-MA’S local honor students

Sean Michael Knick II, the son of Sean and Debra Knick of Washington, was named to the Dean's List at RandolphMacon Academy in Front Royal, where he is a senior. Ryan Latham, the son of Stephen and Dawn Latham of Amissville, was named to the President's List. Ryan is a sixth-grade student at R-MA.

Scholarship News

Garden Club – The Rappahannock County Garden Club is pleased to announce that the Francis J. Leonard Scholarship will be awarded to a resident of Rappahannock County with financial need who is graduating high school and will be attending a twoyear or four-year college or a trade school.

The award will be $1,000 for the first semester of school and $ 1,000 for the second semester upon the successful completion of the first semester. Applicants are required to complete the Common Application for Local Scholarships 2012 and complete two essays of about 250 words each. The first essay should describe why the student needs the scholarship and what other methods are being used to finance their education. The second essay requests that the student describe themselves, their achievements, and goals for future study and work.

Students currently attending Rappahannock County High School can get an application from the guidance office; others may call Bette Mahoney at 540- 675- 3446. Applications are due by March 26 to be considered for this year's award.

Salem Foundation – The Salem Educational Foundation Inc. exists to provide scholarships to graduating seniors from Culpeper and Rappahannock county public schools. Applications are now available for four scholarships to qualified seniors for 2012.

The Thornhill Family Scholarship is available to a graduating senior from Rappahannock County High School who must demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and outstanding leadership skills. The Bill Kyle Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student from either Culpeper or Rappahannock county schools who demonstrates a commitment to public service through volunteer service. The William and Mary Strother Alphin Educational

Scholarship and the “Big” Kenny Alphin Music Scholarship are available to Culpeper County Public Schools students.

Application forms are available at the guidance department Rappahannock County High School and both of Culpeper’s public high schools, and should be returned to the guidance department by the deadline set by the school. Scholarship recipients will be announced in May or June. Successful applicants must be accepted to a program of study in a school of higher education.

Culpeper Soil and Water

Conservation District – Each year the District awards $3,000 in scholarships to residents of the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District that are majoring in a field related to conservation. This scholarship is open to current high school and undergraduate students. For an application, visit www.culpeperswcd.org and follow the links on the front page. The application deadline is April 13th.

Summer Camps - Each year the District sends 4 students ages 13-17 to summer camps - Forestry Camp at Holiday Lake 4- H Center and Youth Conservation Camp at Virginia Tech. For an application, visit www.culpeperswcd.org and click the link on the front page. Applications are due April 1st for Forestry Camp and April 15th for YCC.
