St. Peter’s bake sale: Saturday bake sale benefits the Rappahannock Food Pantry, sponsored by St. Peter’s Catholic Church from 9 to 2 at the soccer fields near Rappahannock Elementary School. Food Pantry Day: The county and town have designated May 12 as Food Pantry Day in Rappahannock County. Events include an open house from 1 to 3 at the pantry, and individuals and organizations are encouraged to celebrate Pantry Day through food drives, volunteer efforts, financial donations, and other activities. Also on that day, there will be a Pet Parade from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and a Vegetable Growing Demonstration from 11-12:30 p.m. at the Pantry. Evening fundraiser at the home of Beverly and John Fox Sullivan starts at 6 and features a whole roasted pig, lamb and curried goat and top Virginia wines, live music, a wine auction and more (tickets are $85). Belle Meade fundraiser: Sarah and Jim Wildasin open the doors of Montpelier in Sperryville to host a fundraising supper for Belle Meade School from 5 to 8 p.m. Built in 1746 by Francis Thornton, the grand house overlooks the Blue Ridge and scenic F.T. Valley, which itself heralds Thornton’s legacy with his initials on road signs from Sperryville to Madison. Belle Meade’s “country casual” dinner on the grounds includes music by Dontez Inferno and a menu by chef Sylvie Rowand with foods from Belle Meade Farm and local wines, plus tours of the restored house and barns. Soap Box Derby sale: Rappahannock County Soap Box Derby drivers hold a yard/plant sale on the grounds of Sperryville Schoolhouse from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Derby cars with drivers will greet shoppers as they choose from a wide selection of collectibles, spring plants and herbs and more. Funds raised will benefit Rappahannock-sponsored cars in the Culpeper local Derby race in June. Additional donated items welcome (no clothes). Amissville breakfast: Amissville United Methodist Men serve breakfast from 8 to 10 in the church social hall (14760 Lee Hwy.) All proceeds are used in the service to others. For more information, call 540-937-4672.
Ruritan food drive: Saturday from 9 to noon is the last morning of the Amissville Ruritan Club’s annual canned food drive to benefit the Rappahannock Food Pantry. A club member will be at the collection box at Hackley’s Store (14820 Lee Hwy., Amissville) to answer questions about the Ruritans and their work in the community. Miss Rappahannock Pageant, sponsored by the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad, starts at 3 p.m. at Rappahannock County Elementary School. The pageant is open to contestants from Rappahannock, Page, Madison, Warren, Fauquier and Culpeper counties (with the exception of the Miss Rappahannock category, ages 16-19, whose contestants must be Rappahannock residents or attend school in the county. Williams fund dinner: Mary Beth Williams Memorial Fund’s annual fundraiser and dinner is 4:30 p.m. at High Thicket on 367 Fletchers Mill Rd., Woodville, with bluegrass by Shenandoah Travelers and guests including Del. Bluegrass at Narmada: Narmada Winery features a concert by Rappahannock-based band Narrow Path Bluegrass, led by Brian Taylor, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the winery pavilion. Cost is $10 per person ($5 for wine club members).
Remington Ryde at Theatre: Pennsylvania-based bluegrass band Remington Ryde performs at 8 at the Theatre in Washington (291 Gay St.), with Ryan Frankhouser on guitar and lead vocals, Billy Lee Cox on banjo, Dan Stewart on mandolin and Wally Yoder on bass. The band performs some 150 dates a year around the U.S. Together 10 years, the band is known for its solid traditional bluegrass and its comedy. Future-farming reception: Holistic Management International (HMI) hosts a free town-hall reception to introduce the 2012 Future Farms and Ranches Upper Piedmont program to area farmers, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sperryville Schoolhouse. Meet most of HMI’S 13 Rappahannock County 2011 program participants and hear how they improved sales, cut costs, saved time and improved social interactions on their farms, while practicing sustainable agriculture.
