More artistic pursuits in Sperryville
From 2 to 5 Sunday (June 3), there’s a reception just down the hall from Middle Street at River District Arts’ Confluent Gallery for watercolorist Mary Allen’s “Garden Party” show, which went up a couple of weeks ago and will be on exhibit through June 24. Allen’s sunlit and simultaneously intense and serene works ( including “Breakfast in the Garden,” shown here) paintings explore the beauty and peace that a garden brings. For more information, visit RiverDistrictArts.org or facebook.com/riverdistrictarts, or call 540-987-8770 (ext. 3).
Already running in the village at Haley Fine Art is a totally notable show called “Alumni,” which features the work of six local and regional artists whose careers were
shaped by experiences at the Corcoran in Washington, D.C., which is co-presenting this exhibit with Haley.
Included are works Alex Bay, Caleb Fey, Charles Flickinger, Thomas Mullany, Maggie Rogers (her “Everyman” drypoint etching is shown at right) and Rex Slack (whose “Hallway,” shown far right, is one of several works in the show).
“The special focus of both organizations on regional artists,” gallery owner Andrew Haley wrote, “is rooted in the notion that the arts are improved by an association with the context from which they derive. The artists in ‘Alumni’ bring life-long commitments to the expression of their unique visions; commitments shaped and informed through experiences at the Corcoran and years of effort.”
Haley Fine art is at 42 Main St., Sperryville. Call 540-9871000 or visit haleyfineart.com for more information.
Bowling for . . . seniors!
The fifth regional Bowl-ForSeniors event is at Mountain Run Bowling Center in the Culpeper Town Mall on Saturday, June 23. The five-county event, from noon to 4 p.m., encompasses Culpepr, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties, and is a fundraiser for Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services (RRCS), which, not coincidentally, provides services to more than a thousand seniors in that same region.
The RRCS is looking for sponsorships, pledges and donations, which will go directly to all RRCS aging service programs in Planning District Nine, programs that include home- delivered meals, adult day care, advocacy, transit services, social interaction, a hot nutritional meal as well as educational and recreational activities. These programs rely on local support from local govern- ment, Piedmont United Way, client donations and fundraising efforts such as the Bowl-forSeniors event.
Friends, family and co-workers can organize teams of four and come enjoy an hour with us and support this worthwhile event! Talk with your churches and civic organizations about getting teams together. There will be prizes awarded based on the amount of paid pledges, as well as from drawings. RRCS is actively seeking corporate sponsors; there are several sponsorship levels, all of which involve receiving publicity by having your company or organization’s name on the back of team T-shirts, plus eventreleated publicity in local media and the RRCS newsletter.
To find out more about the event or sponsorships, call Judy Seale at 540-825-3100 (ext. 3013) or Lola Walker at 540-825-3100 (ext. 3358).
