Kayce Loraine Lucas

Kayce Loraine Lucas was born on June 18, 2001 in Sterling, Illinois. She passed on June 17, 2012, Father´s Day at her home in Woodville. Kayce was with her loving parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, and cousins. The 7th child of a family of 9 brothers and sisters, Kayce is survived by her parents, Jacinto and Amanda Lucas, stepfather, John “Lucky” McCoy, her brothers Mark, Julious, Erick, Junior, and Santana Lucas and her sisters Annabelle, Laura, and Jelma Lucas. Kayce will be missed by all her family here in Virginia, Illinois, California and Mexico.

She loved to be with her family and friends and also liked to spend time alone playing with her stuffed animals. Kayce was a leader who invented games to play with her friends, younger siblings and cousins. Curious about everything, eager to learn Kayce was an excellent student and was on the honor roll at Rappahanno­ck County Elementary School.

For a year Kayce fought a rare form of brain cancer, DIPG, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. The nurses and doctors at St. Jude´s Hospital, Kayce´s parents and family, volunteers in the Rappahanno­ck community, and nurses from Hospice all have been deeply involved in Kayce´s valiant battle. For all those who know Kayce´s story, the word “Hope” was her eternal mantra, and a word that all those rememberin­g her wish to embrace. Hope for peace, hope for happiness, hope for a life free from the chains of cancer, and hope for an immortal memory of a very special, very strong, and beautiful little girl.

A memorial service for Kayce was held at Reynold´s Memorial Baptist Church, in Sperryvill­e on Sunday, June 24th. Donations to help the family with expenses can be made by contacting any of the Rappahanno­ck County School offices. A tree planting ceremony will take place at Rappahanno­ck County Elementary School in the fall. _____________________________________________________
