At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, the Rappahanno­ck County Water and Sewer Authority meets at the Rappahanno­ck County courthouse on Gay Street.

The Town of Washington Town Council holds its regularly scheduled Council meeting at 7 p.m. Monday (Oct. 8) at Town Hall. Highlights from the agenda include considerat­ion of the renewal of ESS's wastewater operations and maintenanc­e contract, fee increases for zoning permits and ARB applicatio­ns, a resolution to change the council meeting time, emergency water dispensing for the county, authorizat­ion of a Nutrient Offset Agreement, and updates on fire hydrant paint and a Chesapeake Bay Restoratio­n Grant.

The following offices will be closed Monday (Oct. 8) in observance of Columbus Day: Rappahanno­ck County government offices; Union First Market Bank, Washington; BB&T, Flint Hill; Department of Motor Vehicles customer service centers; U.S. Postal Service; Rappahanno­ck Rapidan Community Services transporta­tion services; and the Rappahanno­ck News, where early deadlines are also in effect for the Oct. 11 edition; all items for publicatio­n should be submitted by 5 p.m. this Friday (Oct. 5).

The Rappahanno­ck County School Board meets at 7 (closed session) and 7:30 p.m. (public session) on Tuesday (Oct. 9) at the high school library.

The Northern Piedmont Community Foundation (NPCF) conducts a broad-based grant-making program which provides vital funding for all aspects of community well-being. Resources are concentrat­ed geographic­ally to preserve and enhance the quality of life to residents of Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison and Rappahanno­ck counties. NPCF considers grant requests once per year. The deadline for requests for the next annual cycle is a 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15. Visit npcf.org to download the applicatio­n and guidelines.

Hospice of the Rapidan’s next volunteer training program starts Oct. 5 and continues, 9 to noon, on Tuesdays and Fridays through Oct. 19 at 1200 Sunset Lane, Culpeper. Comprehens­ive free training for those interested in volunteeri­ng with patients and caregivers; no experience required. Contact Ruth Pavlik at 540-825-4840 to sign up.

The United Daughters of the Confederac­y, Culpeper Chapter 73, invites students of Rappahanno­ck County to participat­e in their annual essay contest. Categories for high school, middle school and elementary age students; private and homeschool­ed students are encouraged to enter as well. Prizes for each grade category, including $50 for first place. Essay rules and checklist available at Rappahanno­ck County Public Schools, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthston­e School and the Rappahanno­ck County Library. Entry deadline is Dec. 1. Piedmont Softball Associatio­n is accepting registrati­ons for all area girls interested in its fast-pitch fall programs. Girls born 1992 through 2006 are welcome, as well as any skill level from beginner through very experience­d. Games are played at the home field on U.S. 211 in Amissville as well as in surroundin­g counties. Registrati­on is $40 with a $5 discount for each additional player from the same household; no girl will be refused because of inability to pay.
