Wakefield sports update
Varsity Volleyball: The Wakefield Country Day School Lady Owls returned home to face Tandem Friends in a conference match on Oct. 4 and earned a 3- 0 sweep of the Badgers. Ashlyn Ramey held her serve for 10 points, including nine aces in the third match. The Lady Owls then played Randolph-Macon Academy in a non-conference match on Oct. 9 and recorded their second straight 3-0 sweep against the Yellow Jackets. The Lady Owls traveled to play Seton School in a non-conference match on Oct. 11. The Owls fought hard – including stand-out efforts from middle hitters Alexandra Cancio-Bello and Maeve Dale – but fell to the Conquistadors 0-3. The Owls’ record is 10-8 overall and 4-0 in the Delaney Athletic Conference (DAC).
Varsity Soccer: The Owls traveled to Chelsea Academy for a non-conference game on Oct. 4 and notched a 5-1 win. Marc Cugnon and Conor O’Heir had a goal each, while Daniel Chadduck recorded a hat trick. The Owls then traveled to Marshall to face Fresta Valley in a non- conference game on Oct. 9. Daniel Chadduck scored for the Owls, but the Pioneers netted five goals in the game to take a 5-1 victory. Their record is 2-1-1 in the DAC and 4-4-2 overall.
Varsity Cross Country: The Owls traveled to Randolph-Macon Academy for a DAC meet on Oct. 4. Lucas DuMez was the top finisher for the boys finishing in 29th place in 22: 46. Michael Chen was in 30th place at 22: 50. Fred Wang came in 73rd out of a field of more than 100, with a time of 26.35. Kitty Lo placed 40th for the girls, with Mary Leskovec and Jessica Leskovec finishing 46th and 48th respectively.
Varsity Tennis: The Lady Owls traveled to Foxcroft School for a match on Oct. 4. Brianna Rodriguez won 8-3 in the number one singles match but Foxcroft swept number two, three and four singles. Madison Romine had a good match in the number five match before losing 9- 7. Foxcroft then swept the doubles matches to win the team match 6-1. At Randolph-Macon Academy on Oct. 9, Brianna Rodriguez dropped a tough match at number one, 8- 6. Makenzie Magaro won 8-1 at number three singles. Monica Marciano had a good match at number five singles before losing 8-4. Magaro and Rodriguez lost a tiebreaker at number one doubles 9-8 (7-1). The Jackets claimed the team match 6-1. The Lady Owls hit the road again Oct. 11 to Middleburg Academy and earned a 5- 0 sweep of the Dragons. Brianna Rodriguez won 8-1 at number one singles. Grace Albert won at number two singles 8- 3. Makenzie Magaro completed the singles with an 8-3 win at number three. Madison Romine and Rodriguez teamed up to win 8-4 in the number one doubles. Megan Kelley and Monica Marciano pulled out an 8-6 doubles win. Their record is 2-4 on the season.
