Lego and learn

Head­wa­ters/Rap­pa­han­nock County Pub­lic Schools’ af­ter-school pro­gram has two Lego clubs in its cur­rent six-week ses­sion (which has 49 students), in­clud­ing the Lego Sim­ple Ma­chines Club – an in­te­gra­tion of his­tory, physics, math­e­mat­ics and tech­nol­ogy that has mom Deverell Ped­er­son and daugh­ter Maeve look­ing for the right piece for Maeve’s de­vice that uses gears and pul­leys, while Do­rian Thomas, an­other mem­ber of the Sim­ple Ma­chines Club, holds up his com­pleted Lego cat­a­pult. Mean­while Nate Smith, Ethan Sabol and Do­minic Del Grosso use sci­ence, tech­nol­ogy, engi­neer­ing and math to pro­gram and de­sign their project in the First Lego League Ro­bot­ics Club (ages 9 to 14) at Rap­pa­han­nock County El­e­men­tary School. The af­ter-school pro­gram is sup­ported by the community’s do­na­tions and RCPS.
