Following the May 2 election, the government of the Town of Washington has taken on a “new look.” Two men have joined the former all-woman executive and legislative branches. Elected as mayor of the town was Andrew F. Kozik, while Kermit A. Weakley joined the five ladies who were reelected to the council.
Charles Thomas reached the finish line when he ran the mile in 4:33 during competition Friday at Broadway. He was participating in the district competition for Rappahannock County High School and took the mile championship. He goes to the regional competition on Friday.
Cadet Douglas K. Baumgardner of Annandale and Washington, a second classman (junior) at the Virginia Military Institute, has been inducted into membership in Omicron Delta Epsilon, economics honor society. Cadet Baumgardner was one of six inducted into the society at the annual dinner. The society recognizes outstanding scholarship achievement and interest in the study of economics.

The Corner Store in Sperryville is under new ownership, but hamburger fanatics, steak connoisseurs and prime rib fanciers – don’t despair! The meat quality that has tickled the appetites of beef lovers for two decades will remain unchanged.
“The meat will stay the same – underline, underline,” joked Bud Werner, the new owner. Wilson Burke and Randolph Clater have owned the Corner Store for the past 16 years.
Rick Talley has brought the outdoors inside to his living room in the little cottage he rents back in Harris Hollow. He hopes to combine his knowledge of wildlife and love of the outdoors into careers in taxidermy and conservation. After only a year of practice, he’s creating mounts that look alive enough to fly away.
“My priorities (in education) will be basically those of the community. I think public schools are just that – they belong to the public . . . It’s vital for parents to indicate what they want done,” said Robert Estabrook, Rappahannock’s new superintendent of schools, in an interview last week. Estabrook takes over the top slot in the local public school system on July 1.
A 12-mile bike-a-thon was held Sunday, to benefit St. Jude’s Cancer Research Center in Memphis, Tenn. Area bicyclists rode from Flint Hill to Washington and back again to collect pledges for the children’s research hospital.
Leading the cyclists in the under-14 clas was Carroll Stringfellow of Amissville, followed by Shane Thompson of Sperryville. Joey Eldred of Washington finished third in this class and jumped back on his bike to ride the course again. His 24 miles was the longest distance of the day.

The Board of Zoning Appeals has voted unanimously to approve a special permit for Carol Frances to operate a bed and breakfast in the house she rents on Route 618 near Castleton.
At last Wednesday’s meeting Frances said she had met with neighbors who had urged her to withdraw her application. She submitted a letter in which she said she would allow her neighbors to review the operation of her bed and breakfast after a six-month period.
James Cannon said he had bad experience with a bed and breakfast that had closed but had formerly been open in property adjoining his family’s farm. He said guests had brought dogs that trespassed on his property and chased a herd of cows during the calving season. He said in another incident children staying at the bed and breakfast had thrown trash, including bottles, from the roadside onto the road. Frances said she did not plan to rent to people with dogs or children.
