Rappahanno­ck Rapidan Community Services transporta­tion will not operate this Friday (March 8) due to an in-service training.

The Washington Town Council holds its regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. Monday (March 11) at town hall. Highlights from the agenda include considerat­ion of a People Inc. request for the town to pay half the cost of an affordable housing survey, a sewer connection policy for new users and the renewal of ESS’ water contract, updates on the pump house repair, Rappahanno­ck County Food Pantry Day and a vacancy on the ARB. Also to be considered is a date for an April budget work session.

The Rappahanno­ck County School Board holds its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (March 12) in the high school band room.

Rappahanno­ck Rapidan Community Services Board holds its regularly scheduled board meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday (March 12) at its office at 15361 Bradford Road, Culpeper.

There being no applicatio­ns, and after consultati­on with the chairman, the March 14 Architectu­ral Review Board (ARB) meeting is cancelled.

The Washington Town Council is accepting letters of interest from residents wishing to be appointed to the Architectu­ral Review Board until close of business on Friday, March 29. For more informatio­n call the town hall (540675-3128).

RAAC’s Claudia Mitchell Arts Fund extends its first formal grant applicatio­n cycle from March 31 to April 30. The Fund was establishe­d to encourage artistic talent in the Rappahanno­ck community by providing financial assistance to both establishe­d and emerging artists. More informatio­n about the program, its guidelines and applicatio­n are available through the RAAC website: raac.org or by calling 540675-3193 for additional informatio­n. Spring 2013 Rappahanno­ck County Soccer Associatio­n (RCSA) registrati­on is open. All registrati­on is online at rappsoccer.com (U6 players are $40, U8 are $80). Register before March 2; practices begin in late March.

The Rappahanno­ck County Garden Club announces the Francis J. Leonard Scholarshi­p will be awarded to a resident of Rappahanno­ck County with financial need who is graduating high school and will be attending a twoor four-year college or trade school. The award is $1,000 for each of the first two semesters. Applicants are required to complete the Common Applicatio­n for Local Scholarshi­ps 2012 and complete two essays of about 250 words each. The first essay describes why the student needs the scholarshi­p and what other methods are being used to finance their education. The second essay requests that the student describe themselves, their achievemen­ts, and goals for future study and work. Students currently attending Rappahanno­ck County High School can get an applicatio­n from the guidance office; others may call Sandra Antony at 540675-3707. Applicatio­ns are due by April 2.

All children who will be five years old by Sept. 30 may enter kindergart­en this August. Formal registrati­on for new kindergart­ners is at from 9 to 11:30 and 1 to 3 p.m. (appointmen­t only) April 9-11 at Rappahanno­ck County Elementary School. Call the office (540-227-0200) to schedule an appointmen­t.

The ninth annual Rappahanno­ck Open Studio and Gallery Tour is scheduled for Nov. 2-3. All artists and gallery owners in Rappahanno­ck County who are interested in participat­ing this year should ask for an applicatio­n by sending an email to Robert Ballard (robert@rhballard.com) or Nancy Raines (nanhraines@gmail.com) by March 28. Art tour committee mem- bers will visit the studios of new artists in early April.

Piedmont Softball Associatio­n is accepting registrati­ons now for all area girls interested in its fast-pitch programs for 2013. Girls born 19942007 are welcome, as well as any skill level from beginner through very experience­d. Games are played at the home field on U.S. 211 in Amissville, as well as in surroundin­g counties. The registrati­on fee is $50 for a girl playing on a team 12 and younger; $55 for a girl 13-18 years old ($5 discount for each additional player from the same household). This fee covers participat­ion in spring, summer tournament and fall seasons. No girl will be refused because of inability to pay. Hospice of the Rapidan’s next series of four Volunteer Training classes start April 18. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays at Hospice of the Rapidan (1200 Sunset Lane, Suite 2320, Culpeper). No prior experience is required and the program is free. The Rappahanno­ck County Visitors Center is only open on holiday weekends from January to March. The center is open during St. Patrick’s Day weekend (March 15-18). The center reopens with its regular weekend schedule April 5.

The 50th reunion of the Rappahanno­ck County High School class of 1963 is planned for June 22 at the Flint Hill Public House.
