SNP launches its own currency
Attention coin
lovers: Today (Thursday, April 3) and tomorrow (Friday, April 4) officials from the United States Mint and the National Park Service will be visiting Rappahannock County and Front Royal for the official launch of the Shenandoah National Park quarter .
The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. today, as U.S Mint Deputy Director Richard Peterson hosts a coin forum at the library (4 Library Rd.) where attendees can express their views about future coinage and learn about upcoming coin programs and initiatives.
The launch itself begins at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Skyline High School in Front Royal, with guests including Sen. Tim Kaine and Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Molly Ward, as well as Peterson and Shenandoah National Park superintendent Jim Northup. The launch includes a coin exchange (where the public can trade their cash for $10 rolls of the new quarter), the 22nd coin in the America the Beautiful quarters program, and details on a 12-year initiative to honor 56 national parks and other national sites.
Last Ecumenical Lenten service
The last Ecumenical Lenten Service takes place at Washington Baptist Church on Wednesday (April 9). Trinity Episcopal hosts the dinner and set-up, choir members of Washington Baptist Church provide the music and St. Peter Catholic Church’s Father Christopher Murphy is the speaker. A potluck dinner begins 6 p.m. (service at 7). Childcare is provided and everyone is welcome. For more information, call 540-987-8137.

Belated birthday wishes go out to a dear friend, Ray Gooch, who celebrated his day on March 23; to Sherri Burfield, whose special day was March 26; and to Shelby Buxton at Mayhugh’s Store in Amissville, whose special day was March 30.
Other birthday wishes go out to Austin Hull and Mary Bailey of Washington, who celebrated theirs yesterday (Wednesday, April 2); to Andrew Burke and Kevin Adams, who’ll be celebrating theirs tomorrow (Friday, April 4); to three dear lady friends of mine, Lois Alther (April 6), Ellen Mustoe (April 9) and Pat Davis (April 11); and to Clyde Pullen, whose special day is April 12.
Last but not least, a very special birthday wish goes out to my granddaughter, Allie Fox, who will celebrate on April 16.
Best wishes go out to Paul and Cucie Baldwin of Washington, whose wedding anniversary is April 15.
County decal due
As a friendly reminder, the arrival of spring also means it’s time for everyone to get their 2014 county vehicle decals, which are due by April 15. Remember that all delinquent personal property taxes in the name of an applicant must be paid before a decal can be issued.
Relay for Life
Time is slipping by fast this year, and the Rappahannock Relay for Life is right around the corner. This year’s one-day Relay is 2 to 10:30 p.m. May 10 at Rappahannock County High School. There will be a food vendor on site with lots of goodies to purchase. Look each week for an update on other things going on during the day and evening.

Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue is having an all-youcan-eat breakfast buffet — with special guest the Easter Bunny —- from 7 to 11 a.m. April 19 at their station. (All proceeds help fund daily operations.) Hop on over and enjoy a full menu for only $8 (ages 10 and younger free). In addition to pictures with the Easter Bunny, an Easter egg hunt (for kids 12 and younger) kicks off after breakfast (every child gets helmet full of candy). For more information, call 540-675-3615.
