Linotype
Bruce Critzer and his crew moved our Linotype machine from the old Rappahannock News office to our new location at 309 Jett St. last Thursday afternoon (June 5). I was not here to see the move, which required a Bobcat to lift the 3,000-pound machine, but the office crew said that everything went smoothly and the crew did a great job. Our office just wasn’t complete until we got our Linotype machine in front of our office.

Bible School
Vacation Bible School at Washington Baptist Church from June 2-6 was a huge success. With help from Trinity Episcopal Church, the participants had a grand time, as did the school’s leaders. Best of all, $281.53 was raised for the little children in Haiti. The goal was to raise $150 for the week via daily offerings — that goal was surpassed mid-week.
In February, a photograph was published in this column showing Trinity Episcopal Church’s copier, which was either threatening to devour the arm of the Rev. Jenks Hobson or was undergoing a last ditch effort of healing with a laying on of hands. Jenks’ arm has now been saved and the copier healed thanks to the generous donations of parishioners and many others. Trinity now has a new copier willing to do the tasks put before it.
Congratulations
Congratulations go out to Harris Hollow couple Chuck and Diane Moore, who will celebrate their 34th wedding anniversary on Saturday (June 14). Wow, Chuck, for 34 years your lovely wife had to put up with you. (All good I’m sure!) May you both have many more wonderful years together! Chuck, be sure you get Diane a nice gift and flowers, and take her out for a nice dinner.
Congratulations also to the Rev. and Mrs. Jennings W. Hobson III, of Washington, on the marriage of their daughter, Berkeley, to John Patrick Gannon on May 22. Berkley is a graduate of Virginia Tech and John is a graduate of the University of Richmond. Both are first responders working for Chesterfield County.
Congratulations are also in order for Clarice J. Frye, who graduated from Pennsylvania State University recently with a degree in communication, and an independent study in arts administration. On graduation day, Clarice also became engaged to her fiance, Seth Grove. Clarice is the daughter of Clifford and Deborah Frye of Lorton, Va. Clifford graduated from Rappahannock County High School in 1973, the same year I did. Congratulations, Clarice! Much love from the Frye, Lewis, Aylor and Grove families.
Book Barn books
On Saturday, I took my daughter, Christie Ralls, to the Book Barn to purchase some books. I thought she was only going to get a couple of books, but instead she walked out with a huge box. She was so excited that when she got in the car, she was just like a kid with a new toy. The Book Barn made her day indeed. She said she really enjoyed buying books at such great prices, and was going back in a week or two to load up again.
Just wanted to let all the volunteers at the Book Barn know that your services are greatly appreciated, especially by my daughter.
Birthday wishes
Birthday wishes go out to my husband, Steve Clatterbuck of Washington; he’s celebrating his day on Monday (June 16). A special wish also goes out to our grandson, Kenneth Kain Dillon Clatterbuck, whose special day is Thursday (June 19).
Cheap plants
All plants at the Farm and Home Center (at the Rappahannock Co-op) are going for $1 — except for the Bonnie plants, which are 25 percent off. If you still have some unfinished flower beds, this is the perfect time to take a ride out to the coop and get some good deals.
Condolences
Condolences go out to the family of Levi Alther, 93, of Washington. Levi passed away peacefully last Monday (June 2) at Royal Haven Assisted-Living in Front Royal. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served his nation proudly with honor during World War II in Germany. He also worked tirelessly for many years in the Arlington County school system.
A funeral service was held on Friday (June 6) at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel (850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper), with Pastor Charles Clinedinst officiating. Interment followed in the Sperryville cemetery. Let’s remember the family in our prayers.
Father’s Day
Fathers play an significant role in the upbringing of children today. Father’s Day honors one’s father and expresses love and gratitude toward them. I was always told that, “If you love someone, show it.” So make this Sunday a memorable one by doing something special for him.
I don’t tell my dad often enough how special he is — but from my heart, I want you to know, you are the world and I wish you the best Father’s Day that you’ve ever had. I love you, dad.
WVFR breakfast
You can treat your dad to an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. this Sunday (June 15) at the Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue station. Adults are $8 (ages 10 and younger are free). All proceeds will be used to support WVFR daily operations. For more information, call 540-675-3615.
