LENTEN SERVICE

The final Wednesday evening community Lenten service is on March 16 at the Washington Baptist Church. According to the Rev. Dr. Gary Aichele, the turnout this year for the suppers and worship has been averaging some 100 plus people for the first three weeks. He and The Rev. Dr. Walt Childress preached this past Wednesday night on prayers and solitude.

“In case you are wondering, because we have now 10 clergy participating, we've moved to two shorter ‘sermons’ or ‘homilies’ each week rather than the more traditional single sermon,” said Rev. Dr. Aichele. “In addition to adding interest to each of the services, this arrangement has allowed us to cover more of the spiritual disciplines. If the final two services measure up to the first three, this might just be our best year yet! Thanks be to God for all his many blessings--and especially a community that gathers during Lent to pray and praise God together.”

BACK IN THE SADDLE

This past weekend I had the opportunity to saddle up and get back on a horse again, the first time in 30 years. Saturday, my daughter-in-law Amber Clatterbuck, decided to make an impromptu visit to her father’s home where he owns several horses. As we pulled up, we saw her father standing by the horse fence with his girlfriend, Joanne, and horses already saddled. He told her that we arrived right on time as they were about to take them out for a ride. Amber, Joanne and her father (Chuck) convinced me to hop on and it was so beautiful and peaceful, especially after we made it down their steep driveway to the field by the Shenandoah River. After Chuck adjusted my stirrups, I felt like I had never taken a break from riding. I guess you could say, it is like riding a bike. Once you learn, you never forget. I'm ready to go again. We made plans to go back to her father's house this coming weekend and have a girls’ only ride.

On a sad note for bank customers (although a happy note for her), Tanya Hunt, financial service advisor at Union Bank and Trust’s branch here left March 9 to work as manager at Pepper’s Grill in Culpeper. She also is planning on going back to school. She will be missed by so many people. Ashley Allen will be taking her position. Ashley has lived in Rappahannock for eight years and recently moved to Warrenton with her boyfriend, Seth Wayland, and Golden Retriever Sophie. Ashley, we wish you the best.
