Spring sports scene opens: a wrap-up of wins, losses
Spring has definitely come to the sports scene at Rappahannock County High School with all of our spring teams having completed their first contests. mage win over Randolph Macon Academy, dropped a close one (8-13) to Luray and then were shut out in the District opener against Clarke. Varsity softball had a close loss (710) in their opener against Stonewall-Jackson, with subsequent losses posted against Luray and Clarke County. Returning Coach Mike Atkins (baseball) and new Coach Mike Bowman (softball) are both still in search of a solid pitching rotation but are hopeful that their teams’ defense and bats can get them some wins in the coming season. Both teams return to the home field on Wednesday, March 30 when Stonewall-Jackson of Quicksburg comes to Rapp, first pitches at 5:30 p.m. Jenn Rosen, and varsity headed by Coach Rich Hogan. Both varsity squads opened their seasons with wins; boys taking a 6-0 triumph over Luray and girls scoring a 7-1 victory over Page. The varsity boys lost a 0-1 nailbiter to conference foe Northumberland and then dropped their district season opener to Clarke County by a score of 0-3. Varsity girls also lost their district opener to the Eagles but the JV squad did fight to a 1-1 tie against their JV counterparts from Clarke County. JP girls’ soccer open their season Tuesday, March 29 in Panther Stadium against Valley Middle School Conference opponent Wakefield Country Day School, game beginning at 5 p.m. last high school athletic season before taking her talents to the running program of William and Mary. Hopes are high that both old and new names will be added to the state champ banner when the season ends. The varsity squad had their first scrimmage last week at Page County and have their first qualifying meet at Strasburg on April 2 when they travel to the Ram Invitational. The first home meet will be on Wednesday, April 27 with the field events beginning at 5 p.m. JP track will have their first event at Luray on April 14.
And in a final wrap-up of winter sports, the Rapp athletic department hosted the winter sports awards program last week with teams and parents on hand applauding those who were recognized with postseason honors. A complete list of the winter sports awards winners along with complete spring sports schedules can be found on the Rapp athletic website at www.rappahannockathletics.org Go Rapp!
