New happenings at Before and After espresso bar
Before and After, the magical espresso bar at 31 Main Street, owned by Kerry Sutten and run by Jess Sutten, his beautiful niece, is now offering delectable delights such as quiche, muffins, scones, lunch items and what Jess calls, “fudge to pair with coffee.”
The espresso bar also has coffee flavors of the month for which April is lavender and cold brew coffee for spring, in collaboration with Central Coffee Roasters.
Lunch items now available include paninis and salads. Jess said they have teamed up “with lots of Rappahannock County cutting edge farmers to make this happen. We want to support local businesses and thrive together.”
Before and After is trying to complement Creekside Bakery hours said Jess. Currently the espresso bar is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
But when they acquire additional staff and a wine license, “we’ll grow hours to Monday and beyond,” she said, adding she hopes to receive a license for an evening wine bar in time for the Memorial Day weekend.
“We are working on expanding into our market named, “During,” which will include grab-and-go foods for hikers, bikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. It will feature wines — both local and foreign — meats and cheeses, artisanal treats, and other local retail products,” Jess said.
And soon, she said, they will have an enchanting backyard garden courtyard for people to relax and enjoy the spring weather. She also mentioned that there are two office rentals above the cafe available for anyone who’s interested.

SOAP BOX DERBY
The annual Soap Box Derby Yard Sale will be held Saturday, April 30 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the grounds of the Old Sperryville Schoolhouse/Headmasters Pub. According to Thom Pellikaan, Rappahannock’s derby committee member, a “large assortment of household items, garden and landscape planters, springtime plants and locally grown herbs” will be offered. Donated items are welcome. For pickup, call Thom at 540-987-8447. No books or clothes. All proceeds benefit the Rappahannock County Soap Box Derby drivers. (Rain date is Sunday, May 1.)
The Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby will be held at the derby's Paul Bates Raceway in Culpeper County, June 11 and 12. For the first time since 2008 there will not be one of the five O'heir brothers, all Wakefield CDS students, racing,” said Pellikaan.

“These drivers hope to accomplish what Flint Hill VFD former Super Stock driver Gabe Beroza did when he captured the Championship in his division, and represented the local derby and Rappahannock County in 2012 in the All American Derby held annually in Akron, Ohio,” said Pellikaan.

SUNDAY CONCERT AT THE ROASTERY
“The Sunday Concert Series at The Roastery” is host to an extraordinary array of musical talent. Small ensembles of bluegrass, jazz, celtic banjo, contemporary, vocals and guitar grace the stage in Central Coffee Roasters intimate setting. Dana Lyons, a world-renowned singer/songwriter, champion of the environment, an ecotroubadour, is performing Sunday, April 24 from 7 - 9 p.m. Admission is free, suggested donation $10.
