Thomas Hamlin Gresinger, MD

-

On Earth Day, Friday, April 22, 2016, Thomas Hamlin Gresinger died peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Tom graduated from The Hotchkiss School and Williams College. After serving in the Army, he attended George Washington Medical School, finishing in 1955 with his degree in Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, keeping in practice until recently. In addition to the happiness in bringing new life into the world, one of his legacies is that Dr. Gresinger took great joy in sharing the art and importance of the personal touch with patients to young doctors, medical students, and residents he encountered through the years.

Another passion of Tom´s was sailboat racing, including one of his favorite achievements, his sailboat beating Ted Turner´s sailboat during one of the grueling Newport to Bermuda offshore ocean races.

Tom has enjoyed being involved in Trinity Episcopal Church activities as well as local community events in Rappahannock County, an environment he considered as welcoming as his childhood Gates Mills near Cleveland, Ohio. Other passions include grand food, well prepared, then savored, and vast eclectic selections of music & books. Traveling adventures on the Windstar sailing ships worldwide became a yearly must.

He is survived by his wife Sheila Dwyer Gresinger, four children and their families, a stepson and his family, the five children of his wife and their families.

Visitation from 6 to 8pm will be held at the Demaine Funeral Home, Alexandria, Thursday, April 28. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11am Friday, April 29, at St. Paul´s Episcopal Church, Alexandria, with a reception afterwards in the church gathering hall. Burial will be private in May.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations in Tom´s memory be sent to local fire and rescue organizations and/or RAWL.

Tom was born July 14, 1933 (Bastille Day) in Chicago, Illinois. His parents, Hamlin and Helen Gresinger, preceeded him in death. Two prior mariages ended in divorce.
