➤ The Washington Planning Commission meets 7 p.m. Monday (Sept. 26) at town hall to continue the Comprehensive Plan review and appoint new officers. (The commission invites also invites everyone to two special meetings — 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 and 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3 — that will focus on public input on the comp plan and the future direction for the town. A facilitator will be present and the public is encouraged to attend and participate in the discussions.)

➤ Hospice of the Piedmont hosts Family Grief Camp Oct
1. For the 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. program at Grace Episcopal Church (5092 Grace Church Rd., Casanova/Midland), children and teens learn to cope, relieve their isolation and build trust and self-esteem through games and other activities, and supportive discussions. Adults can refresh their spirit and find comfort among others have also experienced loss. The camps is free, lunch and snacks provided. ➤ Virginia Cooperative Extension offers an eight-week LIFT program Oct. 25-Dec. 15, meeting 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Washington School (603 Mt. Salem Ave.). LIFT promotes balance and flexibility with the goal of improving functional fitness and independent living for older adults. Cost is $5 for the entire program, which is cosponsored by Rapp at Home. ➤ Father Tuck Grinnell and John Kiser host a series of discussions titled “The Monks of Tibhirine: The Art of Living Together” starting 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 in the meeting room of St. Peter Catholic Church. The 20-week series of one-hour discussions cover a chapter a week of Kiser’s 2003 book, “The Monks of Tibhirine: Faith, Love and Terror in Algeria.” Anyone interested in the art of living harmoniously in community can learn something from the monks (themonksoftibhirine.net). Anyone interested in understanding better what is happening in the MuslimArab world today can learn something from the complex history of Algeria, its descent into Hell during the 1990s, and its recovery—without Western help.
