B. Gordon Dickey

B.Gordon Dickey moved on to his greater reward on June 2018. A fourth generation Washington­ian on his mother’s side, Mr. Dickey was born in Dayton, Ohio on 3 Sept 1922. While studying at Williams College, he volunteere­d for two tours in the American Field Service during WWII and served in France, Italy, Beirut, Syria & Egypt where he drove an ambulance and was cited for a British Empire Medal. After graduation from George Washington University, he spent the next 35 years employed at the Washington Gas Light Company as a numbers analyst. Mr. Dickey was a gentle soul, writer, bibliophil­e, musiclover, linguist and deep thinker. He was a member of The University Club, The City Tavern and The Cosmos Club but the most important legacy he leaves is his love for animals. His membership in PETA, The Humane Society, Best Friends, North Shore Animal League, The Nashville Zoo and The Friends of the National Zoo in Washington, illustrate his lifelong commitment to saving or improving the lives of animals. Left behind to celebrate his life are his children, Patricia Lynn Paterson (Phillip), Lelia Sinclair Baldassari, Lu Gordon, Laura Gardner (Thomas) and Douglas Gordon Dickey, 11 grandchild­ren, 6 great-grandchild­ren, a brother, Robert Russell Dickey III, many nieces and nephews and ex-wives Frances Gilsey, Peggy Nalle and Lucy Baker, the mother of his children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lelia Sinclair Gordon and Robert Russell Dickey, wives, Joyce Nebbeker Moyle and Frances West Brown, stepfather­s, Albert Lucas and Newbold Noyes, beloved brother and sister Peter Montague Dickey and Lelia Dickey Crossfield and most recently, daughter, Joyce Marie McLamara (Michael). A graveside service is planned for noon on June 23rd at the family farm, Wakefield Manor Farm in Huntly, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, contributi­ons may be made to The Washington Cathedral, The National Zoo or the Nashville Zoo.
