An explanation from Audrey Regnery
Iwill not be attending the candidate debate on October 22, sponsored by a local website. I told the website’s editor, on September 10, that I would only do so if I was satisfied, among other things, that all candidates would be treated fairly. Because the editor has since demonstrated that he is incapable of doing so, at least in my case, I advised him, on October 1, that I would not attend.
The website’s story reporting on the candidate forum on September 21 was not only poorly reported and full of errors, but the editor attempted to smear me in a most inappropriate and unprofessional manner. He apparently found some derogatory reference to one of my husband’s 26 first cousins on the internet — a person who I have never met, never spoken to and could not distinguish from the man in the moon — and included it in his story, apparently in an attempt to denigrate me. At best the smear was a feeble attempt at guilt by association, at worst a demonstration that the editor is simply incapable of being fair, unbiased and professional.
One of the reasons I am running for the Board of Supervisors is to try to bring some decorum and civility to Rappahannock County government. The sort of personal attack practiced by the editor has no place here. Criticize me for what I have done or said, but leave mindless personal attacks in the trash bin.
The website includes no masthead describing who the officers of the business are, who other employees besides the editor are, or anything else about the business. A review of the records at the Virginia State Corporation Commission in Richmond discloses only that attorney David Konick is the registered agent.
With a clear demonstration of inherent unfairness and bias, together with so little available information about the sponsoring organization, I’ll just stay home on October 22 — or maybe just continue to meet my neighbors by knocking on doors across the Hampton District.
