Community Square Dance returning: ‘It’s hard to doesi-doe and not smile.’

- Special to the Rappahannock News

It’s time to tap your feet to catchy music, swing your partner round and round, and meet up with your neighbors at an old fashioned square dance.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, from 7-10 p.m. at the Sperryville Fire Hall, you’ll have a chance to do just that. Rapp at Home and The Rappahannock Association for Arts and Community (RAAC) are having another Community Square Dance.

“It’s back by popular demand,” says Sharon Pierce, president of Rapp at Home. “I can’t count the number of people who came up to me and said, ‘Hey, when are you having another square dance?’ So we’re joining once again with RAAC for a family-friendly evening. Come one, come all!”

A community square dance is a time to enjoy friends and neighbors, young and old, without politics, TV or the internet to intervene. “It’s another way of bringing Rappahannock, a place we all love, a little closer together,” says Matthew Black, president of RAAC. “It’s hard to doe-si-doe and not smile.”

“Dancing is the great equalizer,” says Barbara Adolfi, who with her husband Ray Boc attended last year’s dance. “It doesn’t matter who you are, it’s a chance for everyone to get together and just have fun.”

The ever-popular DeLaura Padovan will return as caller, and the band is the fabulous Cabin Raiders. The Sperryville Fire Hall has a great wooden dance floor and the atmosphere is casual. Light snacks and drinks will be provided, and wine and beer will be available for purchase.

Tickets are a suggested donation of $10 per person (students free). Optional beginner’s lessons are 6:30–7 p.m. if you want to refresh your dance moves.

“This is a community-wide event for all,” says Black.

So, young or old, single or with a partner, Democrat, Republican, or neither, join RAAC, Rapp at Home and family and friends on October 26th at the Sperryville Fire Hall.

“Be there,” smiles Black, “and be square!”
