Josephine A. Alther

-

Josephine A. Alther, age 90, of Sperryville, VA, went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 17, 2023. She was born July 17, 1932, in Rappahannock County and was the daughter of the late Berl and Alice Baker Atkins. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Roy Alther; one son, Steven Alther; one brother, Edward Atkins; and three sisters, Mabel Ralls, Janie Atkins, and Anna Marie Atkins.

On July 24, 1948, she married Roy Alther, the love of her life who she is now reunited with. She is survived by one son, Roy A. Alther (Janet) of Sperryville, VA; one daughter, Ann Pullen (Duane) of Boston, VA; and one daughter-inlaw, Judy Alther of Washington, VA; six grandchildren, Roy A. Alther, Jr. (Karen) of Virginia Beach, VA, Melissa Geer (Matthew) of Lignum, VA, Stacey Campbell (Nick) of Jeffersonton, VA, Joshua Alther (Amanda) of Washington, VA, Joy Alther of Culpeper, VA, and Amanda Pullen of Boston, VA; seven great-grandchildren, Daniel Alther, Emily Alther, Jacob Geer, Caleb Alther, Nathan Alther, Jason Alther, and Kaylee Campbell; numerous loved nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends; and a very special neighbor and best friend for many years, Lillie Corbin.

Mrs. Alther was a homemaker for most of her life and retired from the Rappahannock County High School Cafeteria. From a young age she dedicated her life to caring for those around her, from her parents, to her children, to her sisters and brother, to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and husband. She loved her family dearly, and she put aside her own needs to ensure that her loved ones were safe, well cared for, and well fed. Josie was happiest when she was at her home surrounded by her family and friends. Her favorite place to be was in the kitchen where she prepared her world famous meals, canned and froze vegetables and fruits from the garden she tended alongside her husband and family, and laughed, talked, and sang with those closest to her.

Her home was always open to her loved ones, and she could whip up a delicious meal to feed her guests at a moment's notice; few people could ever say they left Josie's house hungry! She was an accomplished baker and cook who enjoyed preparing meals for her family, friends, and church family. Her famous chocolate chip cookies were especially loved, and were always made for church homecomings, picnics, and other occasions.

Josephine had a strong Christian faith and was a member of Thornton's Gap Regular Baptist Church in Sperryville for over seventy years. Her many years in the church were spent serving the Lord as a Sunday School teacher for two generations, treasurer for over twenty years, and she, along with her husband Roy, were honored and recognized in 2019 for fifty-four years of dedication and stewardship in the church.
