The Rustler 4X4’s Velineon 3500Kv power system is standard equipment across the VXL lineup, which means there are probably more Velineon systems on active duty today than any other brushless motor and speed control combo. Factory gearing is conservative for all-around off-roading, but you’ll still see more than 40mph on a 3S Lipo. A 17-tooth optional pinion is supplied for speed running to 60mph, and if you want to get to 65mph, you can get a 20T pinion. Those taller ratios, though, are strictly for speed running. For maximum versatility and don’t-worryabout-it fun, leave the stock 11T pinion in there. You won’t be wishing the truck were faster. In fact, you might want it to be slower so that Junior can take a spin—that’s what the Training mode is for. Activate it to cut speed and power by 50 percent.
