PERFORMANCE

-

While getting my Bomber dialed in and ready to hit the trails, I noticed a lot more noise coming from the pinion and spur gear. This is because the new spur is made out of steel instead of plastic and is, therefore, louder. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I wanted it to be a little quieter. So before I buttoned up the transmission, I coated the gears with some Trakpower Krytech lubricant to smooth things out a bit. Outside, I installed the Maxamps pack and plugged it in; I was immediately blinded by the Pro-line LED light bars since I forgot to shut off the switch for the speed control.

Boy, are they bright! Right away, I noticed a big difference in how much traction my Bomber had. The tires do a great job of conforming to the earth, and the lugs get a grip on just about everything in their path. The Tekin RX8 and ROC motor combo is right at home in this chassis. I was pretty happy with the top speed, and getting up and over obstacles was easy, thanks to the torque of the motor and grippy tires. Another area where there was a big difference in performance was with the steering; my Bomber now has too much of it. The new servo and stainless-steel links make for a positive feel, and they have no problems getting the tires pointed in the right direction. I also have more throw available, thanks to the curved steering links and long aluminum servo arm. I filled the front and rear shocks with 30wt oil; I liked how they felt up front but was concerned about the damping in the rear because it felt way too light. I bumped up the rear shocks to 50wt oil, and again, it just didn’t feel like that was enough. It’s a good thing that I didn’t make any more changes because, out on the trail, the Bomber felt great with the 30wt front and 50wt rear setup. The suspension was soaking up the bumps well, but over larger jumps, the rear of the chassis bounced off the rear axle from time to time. I brought the Bomber down to my favorite trail, and my experience was much better than before, thanks to the missing spare tire that kept hanging up and the swaybar that kept it from rolling over in the spots where it did when it was a RTR.
