Dual Motor Dilemma

-

I traded my way into a modded-out Clod Buster, and I’m not sure how to set up the dual motors. Can I run two brushless motors off one speed control? If I need to go brushed, how do I wire the motors?

If you want to go brushless, you’ll need two speed controls to operate two motors. Pricey. Brushed motors will get that

Clod rolling more cheaply, and you can run two motors with one speed control (make sure the motors are identical). As for wiring, you can go with a parallel or a series setup. To the diagrams!

Motors Wired in Series

Let’s say the example motors are each 16-turn, spin at 40,000rpm, and draw 20 amps when hooked up individually. If wired together in series as shown, the motors will spin at 20,000rpm instead of 40,000, and the total amp draw will be 20 amps. The speed control will “see” the dual 16-turn motors as one 36-turn motor.

Motors Wired in Parallel

If we wire the same two motors in parallel, the speed control will “see” the two 16-turn motors as one 8-turn motor. Both motors will spin at 40,000rpm, but the amp draw will double to 40 amps. If you go with parallel wiring, make sure the speed control you choose has a motor limit that is half of whatever motor wind you choose. For example, if you are installing two 27-turn stock motors, the speed control must be rated for a single motor of 13 turns or less.
