The Last Bad Day
After reading about the USS Indianapolis,
I am reminded of the USS Monaghan and its sister ships, the USS Spence and USS Hull. All sank during a typhoon on December 18, 1944, killing
nearly 800 brave men. Thirteen men from the Monaghan clung to the ship and then to a piece of raft; one of them was my uncle, Evan Fenn. After four days in shark-infested waters, only six survived. He and the others were spotted from the air and rescued. I know there are thousands of stories like these that need to be told. Our Greatest Generation should never be forgotten. —Alyson Smith Lehi, Utah
