Dry Creek Mercantile might have closed when owner Norman Peterson fell ill and his wife, Joan Peterson, struggled to keep it running. But then Joan saw something amazing. “I was driving to the hospital,” she says, “and there were all these cars in the parking lot.” Customers had come to clean up the place. Today, “the Merc” remains the town’s gathering spot.
