In this farm town, when people see a need, they don’t wait. The golf course, skating rink, football stadium, and baseball fields—all were built by volunteers. When a native son and Vietnam veteran who’d lost an arm and a leg to a land mine in 1968 returned home after receiving treatment for terminal cancer, neighbors lined Main Street to welcome him. “If someone tells me they’re from Fertile,” one local wrote about her town’s Nicest Places nomination, “I can trust them like close family.”
