Researcher­s have discovered a new use for the EEG, a widely available technology: It could help predict how likely it is that a brain-injured patient will wake from a coma. An EEG detected brain activity in 16 of 104 unconsciou­s patients. A year later, 7 of the 16 had recovered enough to function on their own for a short time.
