In 1951, the A. C. Gilbert Company stopped selling its U-238 Atomic Energy Lab to aspiring nuclear scientists. Why? The kits cost about $500 in today’s money—and they used actual radioactiv­e uranium ores. (Though to be fair, they contained about as much radiation as a child would get from a day in the sun.) More dangerous was Professor Wacko’s Exothermic Exuberance chemistry kit. The chemicals in this one started a few house fires. In 1994, the Consumer Product Safety Commission got them pulled from the shelves.
