When I was a student at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, I lived in a dormitory named after a famous alum, Arnold Palmer. A big portrait of the golf legend hung in the foyer. One day, a friend of mine—an internatio­nal student from China who didn’t know who Palmer was—came to pay me a visit. When she got to my room, she asked me, “Why is there a huge painting of George W. Bush in the lobby?”
