Everyday Heroes
The story about lighting a runway with car headlights for an emergency landing was read with a
smile. We lived in a remote fly-in community in Alberta where a girl broke her leg sledding one day. That night, a local storekeeper and I ran down the town’s lake-ice runway to light tuna cans with wicks stuck in them—our makeshift signal lights for the emergency plane coming to pick her up. —Mark Hoefle
