Beacon of Light
It’s not surprising that local residents call this stately lighthouse Big Red. What is surprising: Big Red is only 32 feet tall, a pip-squeak compared to the giant 198-foot Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the nation’s tallest. But Big Red is used to standing up to the competition. It is one of the most photographed lighthouses in its state, a state that is home to more lighthouses than any in the country. Another one of Big Red’s special qualities: It’s the rare lighthouse that stands watch over two bodies of water (and one of those is pretty great too). What lighthouse is it? (Answer on page 127.)
