The U.S. Food and Drug Administra­tion recently approved an injectable drug, called Apretude, that could help prevent the 1.5 million HIV cases contracted globally each year.

The shot, given every eight weeks, is 70 percent more effective in lowering HIV risk than Truvada, the pill commonly used now.
