Feasting at the Fest

Need something to nibble on while you drink your Oktoberfest beers? Start with a pretzel, from the German brezel, which itself descended from the Latin brachiatus (“having branches like arms”). Then grab a frankfurter (also called würstchen, or “little sausage” in German), a namesake of the city of Frankfurt. And for dessert, indulge in some strudel, the fruit-filled, rolled-up pastry named for the German for “whirlpool.”
