The Enduring Delight of the Dictionary

(September) reminded me of an essay contest I won in my youth on why our town needed a new library. My prize was any book of my choosing. My dad said, “Pick a dictionary. You’ll use it for the rest of your life.” Sixty years later, I still reference it.
