Man hospitalized after Thanksgiving morning water rescue by GVFD
GRASONVILLE — Units from Grasonville Volunteer Fire Department responded Thanksgiving morning to a water rescue near Parsons Island.
A hunter had gone to the aid of his dog when his kayak capsized.
According to Grasonville VFD Fire Chief Jason Anthony Sr., the 24-year-old man was located hanging onto the side of the kayak.
He was not wearing a flotation device, but was able to successfully shed some of his hunting gear, including his chest waders.
Waders will quickly fill with water and pull a victim straight to the bottom, Anthony said.
The man was taken by fire boat back to the Narrows marina due to the low tide and taken by ambulance to Anne Arundel Medical Center for treatment of hypothermia.
Anthony said the man had been in the water for about an hour and although expected to recover is still hospitalized.
The hunting party he was with, including the man’s father, placed the call to 911. The dog was able to make its own way back to shore.
Water temperatures were reported to be in 40s.
