STEVENSVILLE — A new national chain will be coming soon to Kent Island. Target will fill the vacancy left by the K-mart at the Kent Landing Shopping Center. Director of Economic Development’s Heather Tinelli made the official announcement in a virtual press conference, Friday morning, Dec. 18.

Residents had much anticipated and speculated what might fill that void. The addition of a Target was at the top of many people’s list.

County Commissioner Jim Moran joined the press conference with Tinelli and fellow Commissioner Jack Wilson. “This is great news,” said Moran, noting the process started about ten moths ago and will bring about 200 jobs to the county.

“Thanks to Cornish Company and Target, in these times when economics are uncertain it’s great to have people willing to invest in Queen Anne’s,” said Wilson. “This is a great fit and a lot of local folks will take advantage.”

Wilson noted the re-development of the vacant space, where in the past spaces that have previously been vacant are “sort of a tarnish for Queen Anne’s County.” He said he is pleased to see this space be occupied.

Owner of the shopping center, Blake Cornish, said it has been a challenging time for retailers across the country. “Really the best have risen to the top, and we think Target is among the best of the best. We could not be more appreciative of their support. This major investment and creation of new jobs, now of all times is extraordinarily important,” said Cornish.

Cornish shared a statement from John Conlin, Senior Vice President, Target Properties, “We’re excited to bring an easy, safe and convenient shopping experience to Kent Island with this new Target store and look forward to serving guests in Queen Anne’s County.”

“Today would not have been possible but not for the leadership and professionalism of Queen Anne’s County from the commissioners all the way through staff,” Cornish said. The store is slated to open in October 2021.
