For many sum­mers in a row, we were thrilled when Dad brought out the box con­tain­ing our pool’s can­vas liner, con­nect­ing pipes and plas­tic cor­ners. Pre­par­ing to “dive” into our swanky, barely above­ground pool in Grand Is­land, Ne­braska, in 1969, my sis­ter Julie, 9, and I were un­de­terred by its 6 to 8 inches of icy wa­ter.
