A year full of triumph and tragedy

The year 2023 started off with snow — nearly an all-time record for the Sierra Nevada — and many of the region's biggest stories were weather-related: Jeremy Renner's horrendous snowcat accident on New Year's Day, a tragic Care Flight accident in February and a muddy Burning Man.

We look back on a year that was full of triumph and tragedy. Here are some of the RGJ newsroom's top-read stories each month.

January

Jeremy Renner accident: Actor Jeremy Renner was critically injured when he was run over by his seven-ton snow groomer while trying to prevent it from hitting a truck his nephew was driving. Renner was airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center with 30 broken bones and other severe injuries. Renner has made several public appearance­s throughout 2023, but continues with physical therapy.

Reno Public Market soft opening attracts 12,300 visitors: Reno Public Market attracted an estimated 12,300 people over four days as the project held a soft opening at the former Shoppers Square site at the southern edge of Midtown.

Arthouse cinema closes a week after opening: Reno's first new arthouse cinema in decades was off to a rocky start after it closed one week after its grand opening. Theater 42, which held its first screening Jan. 5 at its new home inside a renovated law office, had to close due to unforeseen permit and licensing issues, owner Austin Lugo told the RGJ. The theater relaunched in May.

February

Midtown building demolished: Marmot Properties tore down the 121 Vesta Drive building to make way for a new mixed-use project that will add 40 apartments and retail space south of downtown Reno.

Young man with autism lived for 10 months in Reno hospital: Reno police took CJ Stout to the hospital after responding to a 911 call about an attack that left CJ's mother and big sister bruised and bitten. CJ has severe autism. His mental age is that of a 3-yearold, and he suffers from seizures. No one thought Renown was the right long
