Jeanne Norine Lartey Arciniega
Jeanne Norine Lartey Arciniega, age 92, passed away on February 22, 2024 due to complications from dementia. Norine was born on June 25, 1931 at the family home in Reno to parents Dominique and Grace Lartey.
She attended Reno schools and graduated from Reno High School in 1948. Norine went on to study at the University of Nevada where she majored in Education and Physical Education and minored in French, graduating in 1952.
On August 10, 1952 Norine married Edward Arciniega whom she had met while both were attending UNR. They were married for 63 years until Ed passed in 2016. Norine joined Ed in Fallon where he had been teaching for a year and she also launched her career, teaching 5th grade at Oats Park School.
Full time teaching was put on hold for Norine after one year to raise their family. But a teacher she was and while raising their three children she was a substitute teacher for 17 years. In 1970 she went back to teaching full time, this time at Churchill County High School where she taught English until her retirement in 1992.
In her retirement years travel became a focus and Norine and Ed and oftentimes their children and grandchildren accompanied them. New York City, Boston, Washington D.C., Hawaii, Alaska, cruises on the Columbia River and along the east coast, civil war battlefields, all were enjoyed, researched and relished. Lake Tahoe though was her favorite and for over 40 years the week at Zephyr Cove in the summer was a highlight. In 2008 a trip to Spain and France in the Pyrenees Mountains took her to her parents’ childhood homes in Suhescun and Urapel and the holy site at Lourdes, all in France.
In her leisure time Norine loved to read. She was a daily crossword solver. She loved to play games, bunco, scrabble and yahtzee were her favorites. She was an avid bowler, she liked bike riding and working in the yard.
Throughout her life Norine was involved in numerous activities and organizations. She was a devoted member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for over 70 years, a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 32 years serving as treasurer, Desert Ladies Bowling League, Churchill County Museum, Beta Sigma Phi, Churchill County Federal Credit Union, Churchill County Education Association and PTA. While in college she was a member of the French Club, the Womens Recreation Association, a sorority pledge and the Colonel’s Coeds Drill Team.
Norine is survived by her daughters Yvonne (Kelly) Sutherland and Julie Richards, her son Charlie (Carol) Arciniega, sisters Germaine Polikalas and Yvonne (Jim) Thornton, grandchildren Jenny (Tim) Mitchell, Becky (Gerry) Rossback, Adrienne (Kevin) Thomsen, Bryan (Ali) and Michael (Taylor)
Arciniega, Gabe (Aiza), Spencer (Jalisa) and Jon (Megan) Sutherland, Blake (Lindsey) and Derek
Heldt-Werle and great grandchildren Barry, Brooke, Bodie, Harper, Xander, Dallen, Alivia, Kai, Annetta and numerous nieces and nephews. Norine was preceded in death by her parents and daughter-in-law Julie Arciniega.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday March 23rd at 11 am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church
850 W. Fourth St. in Fallon with a celebration of life following the service at the St. Patrick’s Parish Hall. A Rosary will be held on Friday, March 22nd at 6 pm at The Gardens Funeral Home, 2949 Austin Highway in Fallon.

Grandma Nor, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, friend and teacher. We are all so blessed to have known, received love and loved such an incredibly strong woman. She will be missed by all who knew her.
