Monacan finds passing touch to win

Chiefs spoil final game for longtime Powhatan coach Woodson

Richmond Times-Dispatch Weekend - - 804 VARSITY -

Monacan started off slow offensively, but found its stride in the second quarter on the way to a 26-6 victory over Powhatan in the first round of the Class 4, Region B playoffs.

The contest was the final game for Indians head coach

Jim Woodson, who retired after 34 years as the head man.

What began as a sloppy affair, with both teams struggling to possess the ball on the muddy field, turned into an aerial attack courtesy of Chiefs quarterback Stone Snyder.

The senior passed for 225 yards and three touchdowns. The scoring plays came on consecutive possessions across the second and third quarter. Snyder also rushed for a game-high 99 yards.

A 26-yard completion on fourth and 19 set up a threeyard touchdown run for Tanner Addams midway through the second quarter. On the next Monacan drive, Snyder found Elijah McLeod wide open over the middle for a 53-yard score, and the Chiefs took a 12-0 lead into half. On the first two Monacan drives of the second half, Snyder hit Teon Powell on bubble screens, which the receiver took in for scores of 42 and 53 yards.

Powell finished with 138 yards receiving for Monacan. Powhatan was paced on offense by Jacob Taylor, who rushed for 57 yards and a late touchdown on 22 carries.
