Northam de­clares state of emer­gency ahead of storm

Gov. Ralph Northam de­clared a state of emer­gency Satur­day evening in an­tic­i­pa­tion of downed trees, power out­ages and road­way prob­lems caused by snow and ice in Vir­ginia.

The ex­ec­u­tive or­der is de­signed to help Vir­ginia al­le­vi­ate any dam­age caused by the win­ter storm and to stream­line the process that the com­mon­wealth uses to pro­vide as­sis­tance to lo­cal­i­ties and com­mu­ni­ties.

“Vir­gini­ans should take pre­cau­tions to stay safe as we be­gin ex­pe­ri­enc­ing win­ter weather ef­fects,” Northam said.
