Richmond Times-Dispatch Weekend - - SUNDAY PUNCH -

1. Clemson

The Tigers scorched Alabama 44-16 on Monday in the college football national championship. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney maintained his folksy southern charm, referring to the game’s location in Santa Clara as “Wherever-the-heck California.”

2. Nick Foles

The Eagles quarterback has the best job in the NFL. He rests during the regular season, enters for the postseason against a tired opponent and does nothing but win games. Other teams should emulate this strategy.

3. Kliff Kingsbury

Texas Tech fired Kingsbury after the football coach compiled a record of 35-40. But he’s an offensive coach, and he mentored Patrick Mahomes, so that was good enough for the Arizona Cardinals to hire him as their coach. In 2019, defensive coaches need not apply.

4. Beer for kicking

Chicago Bears kicker Cody Parkey missed a 43-yard field goal that would have won the game last week in the first round of the playoffs. Goose Island Beer Co. decided it would give a free case of beer each week for a year to anyone who could make the kick. Unfortunately, the contest was called off when they realized that giving away beer violates Illinois law.
